LICENCE OPTIONS/C.B.T. THEORY TESTS

"WHAT KIND OF LICENCE DO I NEED?"

This depends on your age and the type of machine you want to ride. Remember, if you need advice, contact us.

  • CBT - On completion of a CBT course you may ride a learner motorcycle (maximum 125cc and 11Kw or 14.6 brake horsepower) for 2 years subject to learner restrictions (L-plates and no passengers or motorways) unless you are 16 in which case you can only ride a moped (49cc resricted to 30 mph). Car drivers who passed their test before 1/2/2001 may ride a moped without CBT but would need a CBT to ride anything bigger.
  • To exceed 125cc you need a full motorcycle licence. Before you can take the full licence test you must first pass the Motorcycle Theory Test which you can arrange by calling 0300 200 1122 followed by 11 for the theory test menu. The use of study aids available from high street book stores is recommended. A current CBT certificate is also required.
  • A2 Full Licence - If you are under 21 years of age the only option is to take an A2 licence test where you take the test on a 125 and on passing this can ride a motorcycle of maximum 25Kw (33 b.h.p.) power output for two years. This would include larger machines that have been fitted with a power restrictor. On completion of two years the restriction lifts without having to take a further test.
  • DAS - People over 21 may take a Direct Access Scheme (DAS) test. The test is the same as for the A2 full licence but is taken on a larger motorcycle exceeding 35Kw or 46 b.h.p. Typically 500cc motorcycles are used. No power restriction applies to the licence gained in this way.
